We are participating in our second Georgetown Jingle – this is the annual event held at the Four Seasons Hotel to benefit pediatric oncology at Georgetown University Hospital. Like the Holiday Season, the Georgetown Jingle is about hope and promise and most important, children and families.

We are honored to participate in the tree decorating again this year. The theme we chose this year is, The Poet Tree. We wanted to combine the magic of the season with the delight of children’s poetry by local poet and retired teacher Diane Amber.

It is so important to us to take time out of our seemingly busy lives and to give of our time and treasure to others.

We wish all of the inspiring children and their families the joy of the Holiday Season. Peace to all.

Tonight’s the night! We’ll be at the Four Seasons Hotel decorating our tree into the wee hours of the morning. Ok, maybe not the wee hours, but we’ll be there until every last ornament is in its rightful place. Our preparations began in late Summer and we are so excited that the big night is finally here. Our tree will be available for viewing from November 30th through December 11th at the Four Seasons Hotel and available for purchase through the Georgetown Jingle which will be held on Sunday, December 11th. Here’s a little preview of what’s to come…

We presented our ideas yesterday morning for the soon-to-be renovated Pediatric Oncology/Hematology wing at Georgetown University Hospital. The idea was to create a neighborhood of “houses” that would be fun and inviting for the children. We created a “Beach Cottage” for one of the patient rooms and a “Fire House” for the staff lounge. We loved working on this project!

Here’s our concept for the beach cottage…

And our concept for the fire house…

We extend our sincere thank you to everyone at Georgetown University Hospital who stopped by to listen to our ideas. And thank you to fellow designers Gloria De Lourdes Blalock and Shazalynn Cavin Winfrey – we loved seeing your concepts as well!

TOP 5 REASONS TO PAINT A ROOM…

1.	Provides a room with an instant updated look
2.	Relatively inexpensive
3.	Color affects one’s mood
4.	Provides a cohesive and coordinated look
5.	Defines the space

MY TOP 5 GO-TO COLORS…

1. For no-fail Ceilings and Trim – Benjamin Moore White Dove
2. Sophisticated Soft Grey/Beige – Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter HC172
3. Great Neutral – C2 Twist 335
4. Crisp Blue/Grey – C2 Iris 299
5. Classic Gold – Ben Moore Dijon 193

MY BEST PAINT ADVICE…

I always specify paint after the rug and fabrics are selected. Textiles provide the impetus for all wall color

A trick to insure that the client likes the color before wasting money on large and unusable quantities of paint is to paint up a piece of foam core. This simple step allows one to shift the color to different walls and to make a decision based on how the paint looks in several light situations.

The brand of paint does matter. I am a huge fan of Benjamin Moore paint. They have a huge selection of colors and it looks good on the walls. They also have several finishes to choose from. Interested in a paint with low VOCs (volatile organic compounds)? Benjamin Moore has a product for that as well.

Hint: C2 paint is a favorite as well and you can buy large single sample boards of the desired color at the Luu Color center in Rockville, Maryland.

In design, the details make the difference. In lighting design, the details make all the difference. You may have already heard that there are three different types of lighting that should be used in every room for maximum effect. General lighting is used to light living areas and walkways. Task lighting is just that; lighting used for a specific task. For example, a lamp may be used next to a chair and ottoman for reading. Finally, there is accent or ambient lighting. An example would be a light that is used to spotlight or accent a piece of artwork. These types of lighting help to layer the lighting effect, thus making for more interesting rooms. Lighting can get very complicated. In a recent home renovation I worked with lighting designer Steven Klein of Klein Lighting to assist with the overall lighting design.

Some lighting is useful, but not really great looking. Recessed lights could fall into this category. Some lighting is useful and really great looking. I would place the Boyd Cartesian Pendant in this category. The pendant is pictured to the left. We recently used this pendant in a transitional breakfast area in a home in Rockville, MD. The fixture is an unexpected detail set above the client’s large Country French wood breakfast table. The juxtaposition of the wood table with the contemporary steel fixture sets off the breakfast area in a stunning way. It also provides task lighting at the table for meals and for spreading out to work from home. This fluorescent fixture can be ordered either with a dimming feature or non-dimming. To look at other fixtures by Boyd, you can check out their website by clicking HERE.

Some of my other favorites by Boyd Lighting are shown below:

Maryland Interior Designer, Wendy Danziger has a client whose home was destroyed in a fire one week after the original drapery treatment was installed.

The unfortunate circumstances surrounding this rebuild have shown us how some people make the best of everything- the client is simply a great person with which to work and we are working to make her new home even better than it was before.

Here are a couple of progress photos. Enjoy and please follow us the progress as the end is in sight. The family will move back in August!!!!
